We will remember them............

Of the many great memorials to those fallen in the First Great War, there are none to be found commemorating those of the Notts and Derbys Regiment. These units contained the Sherwood Foresters, who recruited from the local population. 32 Battalions were raised, and some 140,000 men served in the regiment. 1,409 died, either during the campaign, or afterwards from injuries sustained during it.

A committee has been formed to look into the placement of a memorial, near the Tyne Cott visitors centre, Passchendaele, Ypres, in Belgium, the scene of so much horrific fighting in atrocious conditions. The memorial is to be constructed of Derbyshire stone, and funding is being asked from local Town and Parish Councils. Lambley Parish Council have donated towards the memorial in commemoration of the men of Lambley who gave their lives in that terrible conflict.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
